AGM and film screening “Library of the Early Mind”

We have set the date of this year’s AGM for Thursday July 19th, from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm. We will be holding the AGM at the Palmerston North City Library, Sound & Vision zone on the ground floor (entry via George Street).

The AGM will begin at 5:30, with the feature-length documentary film Library of the Early Mind to follow, starting at 6pm.

Library of the Early Mind is an exploration of the art and impact of children’s literature on our kids, our culture, and ourselves. This feature-length documentary film features nearly 40 prominent authors and illustrators talking about their work, its genesis and its impact.

It would be great to see as many of our members at this year’s AGM as possible. We welcome anyone who’d like to join our committee, we need more people with ideas and enthusiasm to join our small but friendly team!

Please feel free to invite others in your school who may be interested in attending the screening of Library of the Early Mind – or anyone you know with an interest in children’s literature! Just forward this message, or the link below which includes the RSVP form, and full details of the event including the trailer for the film.

Entry is by gold coin donation, and there will be refreshments provided and spot prizes to be won.

SLANZA PD day

We are very excited to bring you the details of our fantastic day of professional learning and networking, to be held on Saturday 17th of March, at Te Manawa, in Palmerston North.We have secured some wonderful speakers:

  • Donna Watt, Technical Services Manager at Invercargill City Libraries and also SLANZA’s Communications team leader
    Donna will be our keynote speaker, and will continue sharing her skills and knowledge during a workshop session later in the day. Donna’s sessions at last year’s SLANZA conference were hugely popular, really inspirational, and full of practical ideas that you can put to use right away in your library.
  • Paul du Temple from Wheelers
    Paul will be demonstrating and sharing details of their eBook platform. Don’t miss this face-to-face opportunity to keep up with what’s happening on the eBook front for school libraries in NZ.
  • Warwick Taylor, Digital Services Librarian at Palmerston North City Library
    Warwick will be presenting a “Technology Playground”, showcasing a range of electronic devices and how these can be used in the library.
In addition, we’ve included time for those attending to network and share information, to “show and tell” what’s going on in their libraries, discuss current issues, and learn from each-other, because we know how important this kind of peer support can be for school library staff.
All this, plus lunch, for only $20 (SLANZA members) or $30 for non-members.

So mark the date inyour diary now, you won’t want to miss it!

We’ll be at Barista’s in George Street from 7.30pm to ? on Friday 4 November (and other first Fridays in the month).

SLANZA Central AGM

Just a quick reminder about our local AGM, and shopping evening at Paper Plus on the Square next week.
Date: Wednesday 6th July, 5pm
Venue: 2nd floor of the City Library for the AGM (NZ and Pacific Island collection),
then on to Paper Plus on the Square for drinks, nibbles and shopping.
For catering purposes, we will need to know numbers, so please RSVP to me by Friday July 1st.

A note from Victoria: if you have any specific requests for particular titles or subject matter, please let her know as soon as possible so she can prepare for it.

MUSAC User’s Group meeting Wednesday 2nd March

The next meeting will be at PN Girls High on Wednesday March 2nd at 4pm.

It was decided to have a focus topic (the first will be all things finance – overdue prices, making sure your purchases are in the right reporting year, and what reports you need to do for the auditor/board etc, and how to deal with “donated” items) then everyone can share their issues or new found gems of knowledge!

  • Silver Dunlop (Company of Heroes): Graphic novels and comics

FREE! for members and non-members, so if you know any library staff who might be interested but are not members of SLANZA, feel free to pass this invitation along to them too.

SLANZA 10 year celebrations

On Friday 29th October we celebrated SLANZA’s 10th anniversary, at the National Library’s new Schools centre in Parnell, Auckland.

There is a blog post about the event on the main SLANZA blog, and there’ll be more information and photos in the next issue of Collected which is due out this month.

Posters from each of the region were displayed at the centre – here is a copy of ours. Thank you to those who contributed ideas and words for the poster.

Our AGM will be held on Wednesday 23rd June 2010 at Intermediate Normal School Library, South Street, P.N.

  • Drinks and nibbles at 4.30pm
  • AGM at 5pm
  • Our guest speaker to follow the AGM, will be Karlyn Eales of Vautier Pharmacy, who will speak on “The Use of Sunbeds and the Possible Dangers”.

Welcome back to a new school year, everyone!

We’re starting off our events this term with a full day Book Shop Tour, in Palmerston North and Feilding, on Thursday March 25th. It’ll be a great opportunity to have a catch up, share book recommendations, and find some new gems for your library.
